Summary of Position
The Art Director works under the direction of the Senior Art Director, and plans the presentation of graphics, data and layouts for digital and print; supervises a staff of presentation artists and presentation editors; lays out pages and creates graphics for print and digital display, and performs miscellaneous duties and other duties as assigned or as deemed necessary.
Essential Duties & Functions
- In consultation with deputy editors, deputy AMEs and AMEs, plans the layout of sections of the newspaper. Generates concepts for artwork to illustrate stories, features or covers and presents ideas to other editors for digital and print; participates in news meetings and contributes ideas for graphics, design and data visualization; formulates a basic design concept for a story or page; assigns work to artists, and supervises their progress on assignments; submits graphics to news and assigning desks for corrections; lays out, or assigns artists to lay out pages; consults with others to obtain graphic and data material from outside sources.
- Supervises a staff of artists who are responsible for the production of graphic art elements and the organization of these elements into a page and digital design; recommends or initiates disciplinary actions; recommends the selection of new employees; orients and trains new employees; and reviews work completed or in progress and offers constructive suggestions.
- Performs other duties as assigned or as deemed necessary.
Essential Job Knowledge & Skills
- At least 3 to 5 years' newsroom management experience or related experience.
- Experience supervising a team at a medium- to large-sized media outlet.
- Experience in local news coverage.
- Graphic art design and layout.
- Art production processes and materials and techniques.
- Supervisory methods and principles.
- Newsday's graphic design style.
- Graphic arts technology.
- Current affairs; news stories in process.
- Trends in graphic design.
Compensation
- The annual salary for this role is $109,000, commensurate with experience.
Physical Requirements
- Employees are generally required to work in the office and/or out in the field a minimum of three (3) days per week.
- Ability to travel throughout Long Island and the surrounding.
- Driver's license in good standing and reliable means of transportation are required.
